Blue Mohair Dress – Motivated by the texture and color of the “Cool Water” blue kid mohair yarn, five different arbitrarily-sized mohair rectangles were knitted by machine. Machine knitting mohair is challenging, because the characteristic hairiness of the yarn gets caught in the machine repeatedly resulting in numerous fabric flaws. Originally the rectangles were intended for the cover of a wooden chair prototype, but after many trials, this project never took an inspired shape. Later they were draped and re-draped on a dress form in various combinations, and finally sewn together by hand. The dress was much more successful than the chair would have been.
