Vertical Column Radiation

Inspired by a conceptual chair prototype, “The Falling Apart Chair”, by Johan Granberg, the chair was intended to fall apart when it got “tired”.  This brought to mind a human spine in stress, and the radiating circles were necessary to tie down the second color in the background.  The fabric was intended to be a cover for the chair that was never finished.  While developing this fabric, it was machine knitted in various patterns, yarns and color combinations.  Originally made in higher quality soft wool, it was discovered that only coarse wool can be fulled when washed, making the fabric thicker, narrower, and filling in the spaces between stitches (sometimes called felted). In fact, this piece inspired a later collection of knitted and fulled rugs and cushions. 44” x 18”, 2013
